Lots to see and do at Lacock Abbey.

It is a very famous place not only with a history dating back to the medieval period but  also a place in photographic history and one of the primary locations for the filming of the Harry Potter film series. Lacock Abbey is one of the many incredible places to visit in Wiltshire. It is one of the reasons why Park homes Wiltshire is such a popular choice. The site began life in the thirteenth Century as a home for Nuns so that they could practice their faith in peace and protection. However, as it was a Roman Catholic order it found itself dissolved following the changes brought about by King Henry VIII’s creation of the Church of England. By the 1500’s it had been sold to Sir William Sharington who turned it into a home, retaining some of the features as was the custom.  It was then the subject of a siege during the Civil war on the side of the King but soon gave up after Devizes fell to the Parliamentarians.

After several years of neglect it passed to the Talbots. It was here that Henry Fox-Talbot created the first camera. In the later half of the century it became one of the locations for Hogwarts in the Harry Potter series.

Bristol Docks are the place to visit.

Bristol has always been a natural port. Sat at the mouth of the Severn and the Bristol Channel it feeds out into the Irish Sea and the Atlantic. It offered the perfect first port of call when the incoming Atlantic ships wanted a straight trade route to London rather than sail around to it or call at Liverpool which was further afield. The Docks in Bristol have always been a vibrant and bustling place and this is just the same today. It’s warehouse and shipyards have been replaced with offices, theatres and a thriving gallery and art’s centre.

It came to prominence in the 1600’s as the first stop from the newly discovered Americas where tobacco was being shipped in. It needed to compete with Liverpool and to stop the lengthy delays brought on by the tidal Severn. Therefore, a floating harbour was constructed to take advantage of the water and the increased shipping. As the tobacco trade continued the city found it’s real fortune from the slave trade. An issue that still sits uncomfortably with it today.

As the population grew so did the need for the city’s drainage and sewage systems. Blocked Drains Bristol became a real issue. Thankfully that is no longer a problem. For blocked drains in Bristol visit AMS Drains to solve any issues that you have.

A brief history of humble roofing

Bet you never thought about the history of the roof? Well, roofing was not always as efficient and insulated as it is now. Roofing has an interesting history that has brought us to the point today where we have a large variety of materials and styles to choose from. Let’s explore a brief history of the roof.

It seems that ancient man was more adept at protecting himself from the elements than we give him credit for. Archaeologists have uncovered evidence that roofing was made of whatever material was available locally, including wood, stone, clay and even animal bones. In hot countries, roofs were generally constructed from palm leaves, which is still the method seen today in some tropical regions. Early homes often used wattle and daub methods consisting of mud combined with other materials woven together. Developments in China were quite impressive compared with the original roof style here in the UK. They used clay tiles as far back as 3000 BC! Methods and applications using clay spread in Europe thanks to travel from Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. In Northern Europe, wood remained the material of choice, along with slate tiles as seen in France.

Thatched roofing was adopted in Britain in the early 700s AD. We still have a lot of good examples of this type of roof across the country today. This roof style is also popular in hot countries such as Fiji and Hawaii. The same method is also applied in areas of Africa where thatch is made from sugar cane leaves. Interestingly, the early American pioneers also used leaf roofing with a layer of earth to protect their basic prairie houses.

Advantages of Maintaining an Industrial Roof

Roofs take a lot of punishment, and with the use of modern technology, they have become much more resistant to the elements. In some ways, they are less prone to storms, so you can sit back and watch without fear of water damage. They also tend to be more resistant to damage because of the use of materials that are more resistant to the elements. For example, the roofs made today are made with more insulation, so they are a lot more resilient to such things as high winds and hail. They can stay up longer, and they are built more solidly. So, you can see why you’d want to take care of it. Find out more from Industrial Roofers Norfolk at a site like Modbay, leading Industrial Roofers Norfolk
